Netflix Fires People Over Gossip On Slack

ALERT SUMMARY

Netflix employee’s gripes about another business group on their work Slack accounts were eventually busted for not being open about their gripes like the corporate values state. How did Netflix know about the gripes? Netflix was monitoring the Chats and that's what most companies are doing to keep in touch with events across their organization. It's not just Netflix - almost all companies monitor the business activity of their employees. How far should employee monitoring go? In the Netflix case, employees had been complaining about another department over a period of time which caused a ruckus around the privacy rights of employees on work communication tools like Slack to collect and analyze.

This collection and analysis of employee conversations has resulted in Netflix management deciding to fire the employees in question because they didn’t follow the corporate value of only saying things about fellow employees you would say to them directly.

Is there a difference between a businesses' digital policy from it's "in face" policy? Are employees monitored even more digitally? Employees have choices and can minimize the impact of new digital work realities with straight-forward approach.
