Spoofed Keybank Website Causes Small Business To Lose $249,000

ALERT SUMMARY

CBS News reports that scammers have setup a fake website that looks almost identical to the Keybank website to obtain the bank credentials of unsuspecting customers. The fake website throws up a message that the site is ‘undergoing maintenance’ or some similar messaging. Then later, the criminals use these phished credentials to log into the real site withdrawing money out of the customer’s account.

The FBI says “The criminals are very good at this, they’ve actually really perfected this over time. It’s a business.”

Although Key Bank wouldn’t be responsible for the consumer using the wrong website, they were responsible for allowing a payout of more than $25,000 per week. The small business and Key Bank have come to a settlement in this case.
